Central Florida Springs Day Trips from Kissimmee: Wekiwa, Blue Spring and How to Plan

A spring day can be one of the best contrasts to an Orlando theme-park schedule. The experience is quieter, more natural and often works best when the group treats it as a real day trip rather than an extra stop squeezed between attractions.

Why springs deserve their own day

Central Florida is built on water as much as it is built on attractions. Freshwater springs, spring runs and rivers create a completely different vacation day: swimming, paddling, wildlife viewing, picnicking and trails instead of queues and indoor shows.

For guests staying at Nice Palms, the key is to choose one spring area and build the day around it. Driving to several parks in one day usually creates more windshield time than enjoyment.

Wekiwa Springs: swimming, paddling and trails in one park

Wekiwa Springs State Park offers a spring swimming area, paddling on the Wekiva River and Rock Springs Run, picnic areas and a trail network. Florida State Parks currently describes the spring water as 72 degrees year-round and notes that no lifeguards are on duty. Canoe and kayak rentals are available through the park concession.

Wekiwa can reach capacity on busy days, especially during summer. That makes an early departure worthwhile. Pack water, towels, sun protection and insect repellent, and check the park page before leaving for any access or reservation changes.

Blue Spring: a trip that changes with the season

Blue Spring State Park near Orange City is especially well known for manatees. The park currently separates its year into a swimming season and a manatee-protection season. Water activities in the spring run are generally available from April 1 through November 14, while the run is closed to swimming and other water activities during the winter manatee season.

That seasonal difference matters. A summer visit can be about swimming and the spring run; a winter visit can be about observing manatees and walking the boardwalk. The park also frequently reaches capacity, so timing should be part of the plan.

Do not confuse a spring trip with a water-park day

Natural springs are not controlled swimming pools. Water can feel cold, wildlife is part of the environment, weather changes quickly and some activities have age, skill or safety considerations. Families should read the official park guidance, supervise children closely and use flotation or paddling equipment appropriately.

Build the day around the weather

For warm-season travel, leave early, do the main outdoor activity before the hottest part of the afternoon and keep a flexible return plan. If thunderstorms develop, water activities should stop and the group should move to safe shelter. A villa gives the day an easy second half: showers, dinner, pool time if conditions allow, or a quiet evening.

A practical springs-day rhythm

Early morning: breakfast at the villa and departure with water, towels and a change of clothes.
Late morning: spring, trail or paddling activity.
Midday: picnic or nearby lunch.
Afternoon: one final activity, then return before fatigue sets in.
Evening: dinner and an unstructured night at Nice Palms.

Planning note: Attraction operations, admission, hours, parking, weather rules and park-access procedures can change. Confirm current details before leaving the villa. Useful official resources: Wekiwa Springs State Park Blue Spring State Park.
